2008: Dates for your diary
The beginning of a brand new year seems the ideal time to look forward and reveal the Association’s plans for the next twelve months. 2007 saw the Association run its first-ever full events programme: five regional workshops, and one ‘Meet the Patrons’ Networking Day, as well as the traditional AGM and Gala Dinner. Following feedback from the hundreds of members who attended we have made some tweaks to the events we are running and we are pleased to be able to announce that we will be running specific training days for the membership.
At the Mortgage Business Expo back in November last year, I was struck by the number of residential mortgage brokers who were looking to venture into commercial finance. Many saw commercial finance (by which I mean more specifically commercial mortgages rather than, say, leasing and asset finance, or factoring and invoice discounting) as one of the routes to stave of hardship brought about by the credit crunch. However, residential mortgages are not the same as commercial mortgages so, in order to encourage best practice right from the start, the Association has decided to offer help and support to all those thinking of becoming part of the commercial finance broker industry – whether they are members of the Association or not. However, members will pay less for the day than a non-member will.
The ‘Introduction to Commercial Finance’ days are designed to help those new to the industry get off to the best possible start. Sessions during the day will show a new broker how to put a deal together; what a lender will look for in a commercial proposition; and also demonstrate the other kinds of business finance available. Part of the aim of the day is to show that business lending doesn’t have to start and finish with a commercial mortgage. These days are being run on the 13th February, 13th May, 21st October. For full details of these and any other NACFB event, please visit the events section of our website.
To expand horizons even further, we are also running an introduction to leasing and asset finance training day (6th February). This day is designed for brokers who new to leasing broking or who are looking to write leasing and asset finance business in the near future, to teach them about a specific area of the industry and some of the skills that are required to work within it. The course is being run by Field Solutions Training who ran leasing and asset finance sessions during last year's regional workshops and work regularly with the Finance & Leasing Association. For established leasing and asset finance brokers there will be an ‘Advanced Leasing and Asset Finance’ training day later in the year (12th June).
Unfortunately, in order to accommodate more events we have had to cut the number of Regional Workshops in 2008 from five to three. Regional Workshops are update sessions, where a member is kept informed about any changes in the industry that might affect them, possible business opportunities they might not be aware of, any changes proposed by the Association, as well as opportunities to network with other brokers in the commercial finance industry. These are general, all purpose days – they offer a bit of training and a bit of Networking, but because we’ve introduced more specific events for these kinds of activities, we didn’t feel that we needed so many in 2008.
The Association also aims to introduce new members to lenders from across the market place. There are around 80 Patron members of the Association; ranging from high street banks to small, specialist lenders; from factors and invoice discounters to leasing and asset finance companies. Networking Days allow members to meet and talk with a selection of these and find out the kinds of business they will consider. Last June, we ran a Networking Event or ‘Meet the Patrons Day’ at the Metropole Hotel in Birmingham which proved very popular with both members and Patrons, so we have plans to run two this year – at the Wembley Stadium at the end of February and Birmingham Motorcycle Museum at the end of June.
And of course, no event list would be complete without the AGM and Gala Dinner which, following the success of last year’s event will return to the Celtic Manor this year, on the 28th of November. Of those who attended last year, many said it was the best ever - so next year we have a lot to live up to!
